China’s energy appetite continues to increase at breakneck speed in spite of the recent downturn in the financial markets. The country is building currently building one coal-fired power plant a week to keep up with its ongoing demand.

China’s energy sector has attracted investments of 576 billion Yuan ($84 billion US) in 2008. Power grid spending rose over 17% to $288.5 billion Yuan ($42 billion US).

China plans to increase its investment in energy over the next several years. For starters, it has already announced a series of projects totaling $29 billion including a natural gas pipeline, 10 new nuclear power plants and a new coal mine. This is just the tip of the energy iceberg.

Eventually, the younger and more educated will start to migrate from their small villages to the newly developed cities. It is anticipated China will have developed 221 cities with more than one million inhabitants in each city by 2025.

This urban migration will create the largest middle class of consumers in the world. China’s middle class will be larger than the entire population of the United States.

According to the Ministry of Commerce, China’s retail sales are estimated to have increased by 21% in 2008. With the downturn in the global economy affecting its exports the government is now making an effort to boost domestic consumption.

This translates into huge expenditures for mass-transit systems, retail and office space and of course, housing.

As new regions develop new roads, bridges and tunnels will need to be built to connect them. This will eventually shorten trips that will reduce transportation costs and motivate the middle class to migrate to the newly developed cities to seek work and a place to live.

China’s is increasing its road system to include 12 major routes that will provide an infrastructure of new roads across the country. This will allow commerce to move into the 21st century. When completed in 2020, the new road system will stretch 53,000 miles surpassing the 47,000 miles of roadways in the United States.

So who will benefit from China’s infrastructure play? Companies that provide the steel, cement, machinery, materials and transportation to build those roads.

This represents an astounding 20% of China’s gross domestic product (GDP). China’s reserves will be doled in just a few years. This is compared with the $1 trillion U.S. bailout equating to about 8% of GDP. The US bailout funds are expected to be spent over the next twenty-four months.

To further its recovery China has reduced interest rates five times in the last three months and has started to loosen its lending rules. China’s banks are now positioned to start its financial engines because of its country’s monster savings rate of 35%. Because China’s banks are state-owned cash will be distributed quickly from the banks to government projects.
